Hi All, I'm Charlene Keyes from Florence, KY near the Famous I-75 FLORENCE YA'LL Water tower you may have seen while traveling thru Northern KY.
From an early age I was introduced to music growing up in a family from Eastern KY where it was played and enjoyed often. I began singing with my dad on the gospel radio show he and his gospel quartet did early each Sunday morning before church services. I studied classical piano from the age of 5 on an antique Everett baby grand my parents bought at a local estate auction. I also play acoustic guitar and in my 20's fell in love with the autoharp, an old time instrument with Appalachian roots we share. My first Oscar Schmidt was ordered from a Sears & Roebuck catalog for the price of $100 around 1980.
A fortunate meeting with Country music artist Bill Anderson in the early 80's led to 3 TV performances on the very 1st You Can Be A Star show, American Magazine, Pickin' At The Paradise, Video Country and more all part of TNN, the former Nashville Network. Hee Haw producer Sam Lovello asked me to appear on a new show segment they were starting and gave me the opportunity to perform an original I wrote especially for the Autoharp and for all those like me who Love "Listening To The Harp Strings Ring".
Performing at the historic Capitol Theatre with members and Country Legends as a member of the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree family began in 1984 with a win in their annual Starquest competition. I learned so much from the folks there as they gave me the chance to work with and meet a lot of great folks and make lasting friendships which continue to this day.
In 1986 when music videos were in their very earliest beginnings my 1st music video Log Cabin Christmas was released filmed on locations in and around my then Northern Kentucky hometown of Walton, Kentucky. Another self penned song it aired on CMT often for several years thru out the Christmas seasons. It was syndicated in 230 US markets and picked up by the Armed Forces Network where it could be seen worldwide and anywhere the US had a military base. It featured so many Friends, our Family and Band as together we shared some great times filming it. If you would like to watch it can be viewed on my Charlene Keyes Youtube channel as well as other Tv appearances I have filmed.
